“Mottled” Brush Flies


Last night I was playing around with a some brush fly concepts. I wanted to create a mottled effect on the head of my brush fly to match the orange grizzly hackles used for the tail, but without the need to create a brush specifically for one pattern. The solution was to layer different fritz fiber brushes and afterwards cutting away at the brush to create the mottled effect. It actually comes out very nice, you just need to keep the shape of the head in mind and rather cut a little at a time.

It looks like a technique worth exploring some more…
